Vibe Magazine Closing Its Doors

vibe

By Richard Perez-Pena - The New York Times

Vibe, one of the nation’s leading popular music magazines, is closing immediately, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Word was broken early this afternoon by the Web site dailyfinance.com and spread to other music and media news sites. The spokeswoman, Tracy Nguyen, said the Vibe staff would be formally notified in a meeting at 2 p.m. She said she did not know how many people would be laid off as a result of the closure.

The closure of Vibe leaves just two large-circulation music magazines, XXL and The Source, focusing on hip-hop and R&B. The Source has had its own troubles, going through a bankruptcy and emerging under new ownership last year. A rock-focused magazine, Blender, folded last year.

In a memo to staff members announcing the closure, Steve Aaron, chief of the Vibe Media Group, wrote that for months, the company tried in vain to either find new investors or “to restructure the huge debt on our small company.”

“The print advertising collapse hit Vibe hard, especially as key ad categories like automotive and fashion, which represented the bulk of our top 10 advertisers, have stopped advertising or gone out of business,” he wrote.

The musician Quincy Jones and the company then called Time Warner created Vibe in 1992. The Wicks Group, a private equity firm, bought it in 2006. Vibe reported circulation of 818,000 in the second half of last year, a healthy figure, but like many magazines it suffered from falling advertising. It announced in February that in July, it would cut its rate base — the circulation promised to advertisers — from 800,000 to 600,000.

Rants & Disappointments Regarding BET’s Tribute to Michael Jackson

Monday, June 29, 2009

I find it truly funny reading and watching all these sideline experts across the internet and their rants about how disappointed they are with last night’s BET Awards Program’s tribute to Micheal Jackson.

First of all, let me start off by saying, Folks… get a grip!
Michael Jackson’s death was an untimely incident that threw not just you and me, but the entire world off.  And in regards to the BET Awards, they did an amazing job changing up and redirecting some of their format to pay tribute, especially under the two and a half days they had to accomplish it by.  This requires a change up in a total pre-production process that had already been the making and set to run.  Which means that all of the pre-scheduled tributes, to include the well deserved tribute to The O’Jays, could not be haulted, but instead, shifted.  Not to mention there is no doubt in my mind that BET will also produce a full scale tribute to the King of Music.

Now, If you take notice, no other network even did that much.  Hell, Fox TV are merely playing a re-episode of an American Idol program tonight, where the contestants performed Michael Jackson songs during the competition.

And by the way…  I haven’t heard any complaints from the Jackson Family.

So with that being said, let my end this by saying, stop quicking like a crying duck and shut your perfect ass up!  Or better yet, produce a tribute program of your own.

Peace,
Kato

Michael Jackson - Leave Me Alone

The music video for “Leave Me Alone”, directed by Jim Blashfield, won the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video at the Grammy Awards of 1990. The video was also featured in Moonwalker. In essence, the video is an amusement park consisting of stylistically crude images based around Jackson’s successful career since 1982’s Thriller. Consistent with the song’s lyrical content, there is an emphasis on the tabloid view of Jackson’s personal life and public image, referring to the nickname “Wacko Jacko” given to him by the press, and the various headlines associated with him in the 1980s. Lampooning rumours that he tried to purchase the “Elephant Man’s” bones, Jackson dances with stop motion “Elephant Man” bones in the video. This particular segment (without the image of the bones) was used for the single’s cover art. At the end of the video, it is revealed that a gigantic Jackson himself is the amusement park. He breaks free, tearing the park to pieces.

Martin Lawrence… Animated Comedy Based on His Growing Up in D.C

Well…  all you Sha-Nay-Nay and Otis fans, hold on to your seats.  DC native Martin Lawrence is slowly making his way back to television.

Though, this time, he’s doing things behind the camera.

Lawrence currently has three shows in development with his production company Runteldat and two shows even have network commitments.

Fox has picked an animated comedy of his, writted by Rodney Barnes, which is based on his experiences growing up in the D.C. area.

The former Martin star is also developing a family comedy set at a funeral home.

Lawrence is also working on one featuring an interracial family which, is based on the comedy of Gary Owen and that’s been picked up by Starz.

Darice Rollins, Runteldat’s director of development, added “We all thought he is hilarious.”

And Martin must think he’s funny too. Cause he’s probably laughing all the way to the bank.

Let’s see if we can get him to pump up some Go-Go tracks on this DC Animation!
