WASHINGTON – Washington area residents are the country’s smartest.
A recently released study says the Washington region has the most educated population of any large metropolitan center in the country.
The study by the Brookings Institution is based on 2008 Census data for the 100 largest metropolitan areas. It finds that almost half of adult Washington area residents have college diplomas, and more than one-fifth have graduate or professional degrees. By either measure, the region including D.C. and its suburbs has the most educated population of any large metropolitan center.
The city’s brainpower comes as no surprise. The area has ranked as the country’s best-educated for at least four decades.
