Sherman’s Showcase Nails College Go-Go Anthem

First and foremost, if you haven’t seen the insanely brilliant sketch comedy show Sherman’s Showcase, you owe it to yourself to watch. Taking inspiration from shows like Soul Train and Solid Gold, and mixed with the comedic stylings of Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles), the Zucker Brothers (Airplane), and the Wayans (In Living Color, Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood), Sherman’s Showcase is pure musical and comedic genius that runs the gamut of social commentary to Black nerd shit to just plain goofy-ass silliness. The show, set up as a mockumentary of a variety show that ran from 1972 – 2018 and influenced countless (fake) musical acts, has a myriad of celebrity guests including John Legend, Morris Day, Quincy Jones, Ne-Yo, and more.

The music in the show is so good, in fact, that they’ve already released the soundtrack. While the show is only up to episode 3 as of this writing, the soundtrack contains music for the whole series. Especially of interest is the college go-go banger The Black Kids At The White School, which does such a fantastic job of capturing the go-go sound that you almost forget it’s also a parody aimed at all Black kids have to endure while attending a white school. It’s so accurate, in fact, you’ll be wondering who watched overproduction of this song?

Also of note, Sherman’s Showcase did a parody of Prince that is hilariously spot on:

Sherman’s Showcase airs Wednesdays at 10pm on IFC and is available online at IFC.com.
