Metro, the union representing most Metro workers, and families of the victims of the June 22 Red Line crash will hold memorial ceremonies Tuesday.
Metro’s ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. next to the Fort Totten Station. Metro plans to invite relatives to unveil a memorial plaque and lay a wreath in remembrance of the nine crash victims, the survivors and the emergency crews that responded to the accident. Metro’s interim general manager, Richard Sarles, has invited the families to attend a luncheon after the ceremony.
Metro is also asking people throughout the region to observe a moment of silence at 10:30 a.m.
Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 will have a vigil from 6 to 8 p.m. at its headquarters, 2701 Whitney Pl., Forestville.
The family of Veronica DuBose, a 29-year-old mother of two who died in the crash, has organized a public ceremony at 6 p.m. on the bridge on New Hampshire Avenue NE that overlooks the accident site. Relatives and friends of several of those killed plan to attend, said Carolyn Jenkins, DuBose’s mother. Nine doves will be released at the ceremony to symbolize the nine victims. The ceremony will also include a poem reading and a photo montage of the victims.
“There will be reflections. Each person can say whatever they want to for any of the victims,” said Monica Cochran, DuBose’s sister.
