Nothing spoils a show quite like a no-show. For rap fans who attended “The DMV Southern Takeover Concert” at 9:30 club, Saturday, the sting was two-fold, with both Texas rap legend Bun B and local fave Tabi Bonney failing to post.
Post Rock contributor Andrew Nosnitsky reports that, while the marquee names failed to materialize, “roughly a dozen lesser known local artists took their place. Many of these emcees — XO and Kingpen Slim in particular — showed great promise, rapping their hearts out. It might have made for a solid showcase of local talent, had fans actually paid to see a showcase of local talent.”
Instead, the show slogged on until 2 a.m. when it became apparent that Bun and Tabi would not be gracing the stage. The 9:30 club said the blame fell squarely on a local promoter who had rented the club for the concert.
But good news: A spokesperson at 9:30 says that ticket holders from Saturday’s show can contact the 9:30 club box office for free tickets to a future 9:30 club show. The club is also currently working with the promoter in hopes of providing ticket holders with full refunds.
