White House Finally Condemns Chicago Beating Death

Sandra Rose Reports

It sure took long enough: the White House has finally condemned the fatal beating of 16-year-old honor student Derrion Albert last week.

As you know, Barack Obama is flying to Copenhagen tomorrow where he will join Oprah, Michelle Obama and a delegation from Chicago in a bid to bring the 2016 Summer Olympics to Chicago, as if that city doesn’t have enough problems.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs on Wednesday said the video of teens viciously kicking and striking another teen with splintered railroad ties is among the most shocking anyone can see. He told reporters they should expect an announcement on an administration response to the “heinous crime” soon.

Gibbs says, though, that government cannot regulate what’s in people’s hearts. He says the White House believes such crimes call for community involvement. Source

Jackson And Dupri Back Together

Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri have decided to rekindle their romance just months after calling it quits.

Rumors of a split started when Jermaine was noticeably absent from Michael Jackson’s memorial service back in July. Then one month later Janet confirmed the split to Harper’s Bazaar.

She confirmed that they had split but added that she hadn’t been on a date since. “I’ve had people ask me out. I haven’t entertained any offers thus far,” said Janet.

Well it looks like they finally came to their senses and realized their seven-year relationship was too valuable to fizzle. They were spotted together in Milan this week at Donatella Versace’s private party.

Italy is so romantic, it probably has the power to reunite Britney and Justin. Janet and Jermaine didn’t have a bad breakup, so we’re glad they finally put their differences aside and decided to reunite.

Dr. Dre 2002 Lawsuit Re-opened

by Sharks

A presumed closed lawsuit against legendary producer Dr. Dre has just been reopened. The 2002 case charged Dre with improperly videotaping city employees at the Detroit stop of his “Up in Smoke” tour in July 2000. The tour also featured Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and Xzibit.

The employees in question, mayoral spokesman Greg Bowens, police spokeswoman Paula Bridges and then-commander Gary Brown, approached concert promoters at Joe Louis Arena, and requested they not project explicit video during the performance.

After being threatened with legal sanctions, the promoters opted to cooperate with the request, but secret footage of the conversation with the city employees was taken and included in the “Up in Smoke” tour DVD, without their consent.

The city employees filed suit for $3 Billion for the infringement on their privacy, but their suit was dismissed by local courts in 2007, who claimed that the workers had no case, since their discussion took place in a public room with an open door, not in private.

Last week Michigan appeals judges overturned the previous ruling. “We reject the notion that as a matter of law, parties may not conduct a private conversation…in a public place, or a location when nonparticipants in the conversation are physically present,” stated one of the appeals judges.

“It’s a great victory for the truth for the persons who were clearly wronged in this case,” said Glenn Oliver, lawyer for the plaintiffs. “Dr. Dre and his cohorts have been doing nothing but blowing smoke over the last few years and the Court of Appeals clearly saw through it. We believe at trial the jury is going to see through it as well. We expect to see Dr. Dre and the rest of the defendants in Detroit for a trial.”

Additionally, the appeals judges stated that by distributing the footage via the DVD, Dre had even further infringed on the rights of his employees.

We’ll see how this pans out. Hope this doesn’t turn into yet another excuse for Dre to push back ‘Detox.’

Warner Music Group, YouTube Reach Deal To Bring Artist Videos Back To The Site

By Tim Boswell

Warner Music Group and YouTube came to an agreement Tuesday (September 29), reaching a deal which will allow music videos from the label’s artists back on the popular video sharing website.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed at press time, but reports indicate that WMG would receive the majority of the ad revenue generated from the clips on the site.

“It sets us up for a sustainable partnership going forward by sharing revenues, where the vast majority of the revenues will be going to Warner Music associated with advertising when consumers watch or listen to the content on YouTube,” said Chris Maxcy, head of Music partnerships at YouTube.

Back in December of last year, WMG pulled all music videos from their artists off of YouTube after negotiations between the two companies ended.

WMG is the world’s third largest music company, housing a number of other major labels such as Atlantic Records, Warner Bros. Records, Asylum Records, and several others.

Through the deal, they’ll have the ability to control a number of different YouTube channels representing artists. At press time, Vivendi’s Universal Music had the most popular channel on YouTube.

With the deal in place, YouTube will now feature videos from all the major music companies — including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and EMI Music.

RZA Plans to Appeal Ghostface’s Royalties Lawsuit Win

by Sharks

Last week it was reported that a settlement had been reached between Wu-Tang rapper Ghostface and producer RZA regarding unpaid publishing royalties for their early collaborations. Today, RZA responded to the reports, claiming that while there is no bad blood between any Wu members, things were far from “settled” and that he plans on appealing.

“I’m not appealing because I don’t want to pay Ghost something that I owe him,” RZA explained adamant that money was not the main issue. “Anything I owe him I would give him. He wouldn’t have to go through the courts to get it from me. An example is on ‘Cuban Linx’ I didn’t charge no money on Raekwon for that. The last beats I did for Ghost was ‘Run’ and some other s—, and it was the same thing. I waived payments for later. They haven’t paid me for those.”

RZA, born Robert Diggs, went on to argue that Ghost’s representation fails to understand that it is standard practice for all hip-hop producers to receive 50 percent of the publishing royalties, regardless of whether he/she is a member of the group.

“For them to say that’s wrong, and the producer shouldn’t get 50 percent, that means every producer in this industry can now have a potential claim against them from an artist,” he continued. “Remember, we don’t sign contracts in studios. So when Erick Sermon produced on ‘The Blackout,’ he got 50 percent When Megahertz produced ‘We Pop’ for me, it’s me and four other rappers. Megahertz got 50 percent, and me and the other rappers had to split the rest of it.”

In addition to making the beat, the RZA contends that he produces and arranges the Wu albums from start to finish and thus works three times longer than the rest of the group’s members on each album.

“The beat is made before you even get to the studio 80 percent of the time. The beats are made on my own time then brought to the studio, tracked down with me and the engineer, and then you’re brought in to do your 16 bars. [laughs] Then I EQ your s—!’ … I’m only appealing it ain’t right for no producer in our business to have to potentially go through this. It’s been like this for over 100 years where the producer gets 50 percent.”

RZA claims his main concern is with the principle that if he loses the suit, it means he was deemed worthy of less publishing than outside producers, regardless of the fact that he spent the most time working on the music on the album and directs the project from start to finish.

“Me, as the producer, I sit in the house all day and make beats. So for them to say differently really offends me and I’m sure it offends all producers. So again, is it right for RZA to receive less than 50 percent when every other producer for Ghostface has received 50 percent for every beat he’s made from him: from Pete Rock to every unknown n—- producing for him that’s using my sound. What’s so bad is their using my sound getting 50 percent and here I am the inventor of the sound getting scrutinized. I’d love to see the answers we’ll get on this. I know it’s a lot, but that’s what it is.”

LISARAYE’S REP DENIES SHARPTON HOOKUP: The two hung together over the weekend to promote a new White House Education Tour

LisaRaye’s publicist has denied rampant reports across the black blogosphere that the actress is dating Rev. Al Sharpton. The rumors started flying after the two were photographed holding hands at various events over the past several days.

Gossip site Media Take Out on Tuesday said they were spotted looking “cozy” at Roland Martin’s Congressional Black Caucus party in Washington D.C. They were also photographed walking through an airport and at Sharpton’s Monday appearance on “WWE Raw.”

But the outings were strictly business, according to Jeter. The two are involved in the Obama administration’s vision of educational innovation and are promoting a tour that will take them through various cites that serve as solid examples of school reform.

“LisaRaye is involved in the White House Education Tour with Education Secretary Arne Duncan, former GOP House speaker Newt Gingrich and Rev. Al Sharpton because she has a foundation, Radiant Jewels, that gives scholarships to young girls,” Jeter explained to EURweb exclusively. “So [the White House Education Tour] is a direct tie-in to what she’s already been doing.”

The Education Tour kicked off yesterday (Sept. 29) in Philadelphia, with stops booked in New Orleans on Nov. 3 and Baltimore on Nov. 13.

And just to be clear, Jeter says that her client and Rev. Al are not an item, Sharpton never counseled LisaRaye through her divorce with Michael Misick as previously reported, and he has never served as her spiritual advisor.

“Every time you see LisaRaye with some person, don’t assume that she’s dating them,” Jeter said. “There’s a bigger picture to what she’s doing.”

The Beat, Reissued

by Justin Moyer

When George Washington University music professor Kip Lornell teamed up with former Experience Unlimited (EU) manager Charles C. Stephenson to introduce academia to D.C.’s primary musical export in 2001’s The Beat, go-go blasted through boomboxes held by guys selling mixtapes out of cars near the intersection of East Capitol St. and Benning Road NE more often than it was heard on WPGC.

Eight years later, white frat boys are lining up to watch Chuck Brown headline the 9:30 Club. We asked Lornell and Stephenson about what has changed.

City Paper: Why does go-go face such a struggle for mainstream acceptance?

Charles C. Stephenson: I don’t think it’s a struggle. You go back historically—there’s been an evolution…most of the musicians are basically satisfied. They don’t want it commercialized. As long as they can play the music in its purest form, they feel good. Some bands would like to go international, national. Periodically, there are breakout artists that reach higher heights. But the majority of musicians associated with go-go are just happy to play the music.

Kip Lornell: It’s no more of a struggle now than it was 10 or 20 years ago….Keep in mind that media has changed so much….It’s much easier to consume go-go if you’re in Amarillo, Texas, and its 2009 than if you’re in Amarillo if it’s 1999.

But if you take go-go out of a club east of the river or in P.G. County, is it still go-go?

Stephenson: You say “go–go,” but that doesn’t describe it all. That’s how it’s been since the beginning. Chuck Brown has a jazz/blues influence…EU had a a rock influence. Everybody has different influences, but what brings it together…the essence of it is the beat.

Lornell: Mambo Sauce got together to break go-go out of D.C.…it was all very carefully put together. That’s the difference between Mambo Sauce and Chuck [Brown], who’s put together a lot of great musicians…but his groups were never meant to bring go-go out of D.C.

Stephenson: I did a [radio] interview…a gentleman called in and said, “I hope go-go doesn’t get out of D.C., because I think it would change the music and it might kill it.” If you wanna hear zydeco, you gotta go to New Orleans. If you want to hear blues, you have to go Chicago…This guy didn’t think there was anything wrong with go-go being confined, contained…as long as it kept the essence of the music.

Lornell: When you decontextualize music and take it out of clubs in DC…it does change some of the performance practices, but the music remains largely the same….Gumbo stays gumbo.

Do you think D.C.’s gentrification will kill go-go?

Lornell: You’d have to gentrify PG County. [Laughs] I don’t see much gentrification out there.

Stephenson: The music ha[s] actually extended its reach. Clubs in Montgomery County I would never expect host go-go….I heard Mambo Sauce in Vienna, Va….There are a plethora of clubs in P.G. County that, eight or nine years ago, wouldn’t exist.

I saw [jazz artist] Marcus Johnson at a Holiday Inn. He’s there every Thursday on Capitol Hill. During the last set, he does “the beat.” And the audience is in their mid-30s and up….There are just different forms of go-go now that didn’t exist when we finished the last [edition].

Will there be a new edition of The Beat in 2019?

Lornell: My initial reaction is probably not. I think, in terms of documenting go-go, what’s really needed is a really good, thorough hour-long documentary that’s widely available. There are some documentaries, but none have enough depth.

Stephenson: I think the next edition will be written by someone else. There are some younger people working on it….The music isn’t exactly standing still.

Kip Lornell and Charles C. Stephenson appear with Chuck Brown at Busboys and Poets on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m.

The network’s groundbreaking two-year deal with Cannon, which begins immediately, positions him in front of the camera and behind the desk as Chairman of The N as it transforms into TeenNick. On Monday, Sept. 28, The N will rebrand itself as TeenNick, further developing and delivering on its mission of serving teens through programming reflecting the breadth and depth of “teendom.”

As TeenNick’s Chairman, Cannon will serve as creative consultant and provide his vision on several projects for the teen network and its development slate. He will have a presence on-air, online and behind-the-scenes as he works closely with the network’s development and on-air teams to harness and execute new ideas across multiple platforms.

“I started my career here at Nickelodeon and am so excited to be back, serving as an integral part of TeenNick as the in-house voice and representative for teens everywhere,” said Cannon. “TeenNick is their network and I am here to make sure this is an ultimate destination for and about them.”

Cannon also will host and executive produce the TeenNick HALO Awards, a new hour-long special celebrating ordinary teens who make a difference in the world. Production on the TeenNick HALO Awards is scheduled to commence this summer and the special will premiere December 2009 on TeenNick and Nick at Nite. In addition, Cannon will serve as executive producer on a new original two-hour TV movie for Nickelodeon which is currently in development.

The TeenNick HALO Awards will feature Cannon and a roster of his celebrity friends who will travel around the country and surprise, recognize and celebrate ordinary teens who are doing extraordinary things for their community, in the hopes of inspiring and motivating a new generation of leaders.

Cited by People Magazine as one of the ‘Top Ten Most Successful Young People in Hollywood,” and featured on the Cover of Black Enterprises’ “40 Under 40,” 28-year-old Nick Cannon is a successful, multi-faceted entertainer, film star, comedian, musician, writer and executive producer of his very own hit TV shows.

A San Diego native, Cannon began performing at the age of eight after his grandfather gave him several instruments as a gift. Through what Cannon recalls as “a lot of trial and failure,” he recorded his first song at home on his boom box. Shortly after, Cannon took the stage to perform his music along with stand-up comedy.

Cannon headed for Hollywood at the age of 15 and landed gigs at world renowned comedy venues including The Improv, The Laugh Factory and the Comedy Store. Cannon went on to share the stage with the likes of Chris Tucker, Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock before landing his first television gig as a stand-up audience warm-up for the long-running Nickelodeon hit show All That. Producers quickly recognized Cannon’s calling was in front of the camera and he became a regular on the show as well as a writer, making him the youngest staff writer in television history at the age of 17. This path culminated in the creation of “The Nick Cannon Show” which he starred, directed and executive produced, earning him his first Kids’ Choice Award.

Cannon’s powerful stage presence captivated more than just pint-sized audiences. While he enjoyed tremendous success on Nickelodeon, Cannon’s career catapulted onto the big screen in 2002. He made an appearance alongside Will Smith in “Men In Black II” before landing a leading role in the classic feature film “Drumline.”

That same year he released his own self-titled debut album, and has collaborated with a host of other musicians, such as Kanye West, The Neptunes, Diddy, Mary J. Blige, Will Smith, R. Kelly and E-40 on soundtracks and other projects.

Cannon later lent his voice to the character of “Louis” in “Garfield: The Movie,” and starred in feature films such as “Underclassman” which he also executive produced, “Shall we Dance” and “Roll Bounce.”

In 2005, MTV debuted Nick Cannon Presents: Wild N Out, an improv comedy show with musical performances that Cannon created, produced and hosted which eventually became one of MTV’s highest rated shows in the network’s history, airing new episodes for four consecutive seasons.

In the fall of 2006, Cannon was featured in the Emilio Estevez written and directed film “Bobby,” a fictionalized account of the hours leading up to the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. Cannon shared the screen with stars such as Harry Belafonte, Demi Moore, Laurence Fishburne, Anthony Hopkins, Sharon Stone among many others. His performance earned him a 2007 Screen Actor’s Guild nomination for “Outstanding Performance by a cast in a Motion Picture,” in addition to becoming the first African-American actor in history to be honored at the world renowned Cannes Film Festival with the “Breakthrough Actor of the Year” Award.

Nas Pens Letter to Teens Responsible for Chicago Street Murder

by Nadeska Alexis

After a video documenting the brutal street beating and murder of a high school student on Chicago’s Southside sent shock waves across the nation last week Thursday, reactions from horrified citizens and celebrities have continued to flood the web.

Police say that 16-year-old Derrion Albert was caught in the middle of a dispute between two warring factions just four blocks from his school and was beaten to death by a group of boys while bystanders looked on and filmed the incident.

Relaying the heartbreak of a nation and a culture, Nas penned a heartfelt letter via Global Grind, addressing the youth who were responsible for the murder, chastising them for picking the wrong fights, but explaining that it was something he saw often in his youth.

“We chose the dumbest things to go the hardest for. I remember seeing deaths over 8 ball jackets, Fila sneakers, and name plate chains.,” he wrote. “Deaths over “he say, she say”!!!!! “I’m from this block or I’m from that block”, or “my moms n pops is f—ed up now the whole world gotta pay!!!”

The Queens rapper pleaded with the perpetrators, all of whom are under 20-years-old, to realize that only they possess the power to enhance the future of the black community.

Nas begged them to realize that the days of violence and hatred depicted in early 90s films such as Juice and Bell should be a thing of the past.

“When we see each other why do we see hatred? Why were we born in a storm, born soldiers, WARRIORS….and instead of building each other up we are at war with each other..” he wrote. “May the soul of this young person find peace with the almighty. I’m with you young warriors. You’re me and I’m you. But trust me! you are fighting the wrong war.”

Four suspects have been arrested and charged with the murder of the high school junior, including 19-year-old Silvanus Shannon, 16-year-old Eric Caron, 18-year old Eugene Riley and 17-year-old Eugene Bailey.

Are Wale and Tabi The Cause of the DMV Southern Takeover Concert No Shows at the 930 Club?

Based on the following letter circulated by Mike Chanko, promoter of the DMV Southern Takeover event at the 930 Club this past Saturday, the no shows of Bun B, Wale and Tabi Bonney was caused due to Wale’s bad mouthing (Twittering) of the show:

“Ok, here it is. A lot of people are wondering what is going on and what had happen to Bun B.  I was asked to be on a few shows to discuss the DMV South show @ the 930 club. Wale has been twitting negative things about my show for weeks after weeks, but this put the icing on it. I have an addenum signed specificly for this matter. Although the management signed the addenum faxed to me, I couldn’t attach it to show his signature.

[Click on to read the contract addenum and click on to read what Wale said.]

My argument with Bun B manager is that, their boy Wale falsified Bun’s whereabouts, damaging my show. Wale was not even in house. He was in Darmount (N.H) when he did this twittering, and Bun was flying from Tulsa to DC and I check him in his hotel. I brought it to Bun and his manager and they saw the same thing. They said that they can’t control what Wale do. Well, if Wale is your boy, why is he messing with the show that you’re on? That means if the show flop because of him, 9 out of 10 of promoters will cancel you out and you will not get your 2nd half. In this case, my addendum speaks for itself. Does Bun B really know what Wale just caused because of his ignorance and egotistic? Bun’s manager still wanted his 2nd half. I refuse because it violates my contract. That’s why Bun didn’t make it to the show.

Now the Washington Post writes about what happen to the show? The 930 club of course blames the promoter.  But the 930 club also gave me the wrong ticket sale, making me think it was 285 a couple of days before the event, yet when I came to the venue the day of the event, they said I only sold about 70 tickets. My mouth dropped. They said that it was including my comps that I pulled out. I have an email stating my ticket “sales”. Not Comps. That’s two different words. Also, the day of the event, I have at least 30 + people who told me that when they tried to purchase tickets online, it booted them off the sale and said ticket aren’t available for this show.

This concert had a lot of support and great promotion behind it to only sell about 70 tickets.  It has been promoted 6 weeks in advance. We’re talking about radio and college radio, ad truck, email blast, 40k + flyer, posters and every colleges in this area was hit and to have only 70 sold, something’s not right! If I would had known ticket sales were that low with all the negative twittering between Wale and Tabi, I would had postponed for another date, so that there wouldn’t be any interference.

Tabi did it because after they agreed on the show and I put them on the flyer, they later came back and ask for more money. That’s dirty. I have no respect for a person like that!!

Did Wale and Tabi know that also caused the up and coming DC artist there chance for a big audience to come see them?  Because of his ignorance.

His local booking/assistant MIKE WILSON, confirmed his appearance, and along with being on the flyer, I have that on my phone text confirming it. The 930 Club also got a call from the other booking agency and said the same thing,  but because they got the date conflicted, I was to blame. So where was I wrong for wale to twitt negative things about my event? Because he was announced to the VMAs, he got a bigger offer from the college, and that’s where he went with. Either he never blamed his camp, or his camp never told him the truth and let him run his mouth. This is one of the reasons why WKYS disses him. “We only play hot songs.” Why support Wale for when he don’t even support the up & coming artist? This show was not just about me.  I have so many call about artist wanting to open up. I couldn’t put everyone on. I tried. Everyone knows that performing @ the 930 club is a good look on your resume.  I didn’t have to add anyone on, but I did it because I feel there is good talent here in the DMV. I’m trying to give them a chance and I got screwed. I have more radio interviews, and I’m about to clear it with the Washington Post as well.

Thanks for your support, you deserve to know the truth!!”
