Rants & Disappointments Regarding BET’s Tribute to Michael Jackson

Monday, June 29, 2009

I find it truly funny reading and watching all these sideline experts across the internet and their rants about how disappointed they are with last night’s BET Awards Program’s tribute to Micheal Jackson.

First of all, let me start off by saying, Folks… get a grip!
Michael Jackson’s death was an untimely incident that threw not just you and me, but the entire world off.  And in regards to the BET Awards, they did an amazing job changing up and redirecting some of their format to pay tribute, especially under the two and a half days they had to accomplish it by.  This requires a change up in a total pre-production process that had already been the making and set to run.  Which means that all of the pre-scheduled tributes, to include the well deserved tribute to The O’Jays, could not be haulted, but instead, shifted.  Not to mention there is no doubt in my mind that BET will also produce a full scale tribute to the King of Music.

Now, If you take notice, no other network even did that much.  Hell, Fox TV are merely playing a re-episode of an American Idol program tonight, where the contestants performed Michael Jackson songs during the competition.

And by the way…  I haven’t heard any complaints from the Jackson Family.

So with that being said, let my end this by saying, stop quicking like a crying duck and shut your perfect ass up!  Or better yet, produce a tribute program of your own.

Peace,
Kato

Martin Lawrence… Animated Comedy Based on His Growing Up in D.C

Well…  all you Sha-Nay-Nay and Otis fans, hold on to your seats.  DC native Martin Lawrence is slowly making his way back to television.

Though, this time, he’s doing things behind the camera.

Lawrence currently has three shows in development with his production company Runteldat and two shows even have network commitments.

Fox has picked an animated comedy of his, writted by Rodney Barnes, which is based on his experiences growing up in the D.C. area.

The former Martin star is also developing a family comedy set at a funeral home.

Lawrence is also working on one featuring an interracial family which, is based on the comedy of Gary Owen and that’s been picked up by Starz.

Darice Rollins, Runteldat’s director of development, added “We all thought he is hilarious.”

And Martin must think he’s funny too. Cause he’s probably laughing all the way to the bank.

Let’s see if we can get him to pump up some Go-Go tracks on this DC Animation!

RARE ESSENCE - SHOO BE DO WOP

Classic Rare Essence single “Shoo Be Do Wop” from 1984.  This is a cut that definitely brings back the memories of the Friday nights at the Howard Theater, as Little Benny & Lawrence the Maniac would call to the crowd,

“Are you Jam Jam Jamming on the left?

Are you Jam Jam Jamming on the right?

Are you Jam Jam Jamming in the balcony?

Are you Jam Jam Jamming all the round the house?”

And take my word for it…  WE WERE!!!

Jury in RIAA Trial Slaps $2 Million Fine on Jammie Thomas

By David Kravets

A federal jury on Thursday found Jammie Thomas-Rasset liable in the nation’s only Recording Industry Association of America file-sharing case to go to trial, dinging her $1.92 million for infringing 24 songs.

Thomas-Rasset (then just Jammie Thomas) went to trial two years ago, and was ordered to pay $222,000 by a different jury for the same songs. The judge in the first case declared a mistrial. Thomas-Rasset opted for a new trial instead of settling like the 30,000-plus others the RIAA has sued or threatened to sue for copyright infringement.

Thomas-Rasset, fined $80,000 a track, told our sister publication, Ars Technica, she wouldn’t pay.

Clearly, the Minneapolis jury didn’t buy her latest version of events. This time, she testified that her children might have used her computer to file share on Kazaa. The previous trial, she testified a file-sharing hack or crack hijacked her WiFi connection, even though she didn’t have a WiFi router.

Under the Copyright Act, juries can award damages of up to $150,000 per pilfered track. About $3,500 was the average payment in the thousands of RIAA cases that settled out of court.

In December, the record labels announced they were winding down their 5-year-old litigation campaign and instead began lobbying ISPs to disconnect music file sharers. But the RIAA, the labels’ litigation arm, said it was continuing with the hundreds of cases already in the legal pipeline.

Here’s Thomas-Rasset’s $1.92 million playlist.

Chris Paul Quits WPGC’s Donnie Simpson, Jumping To Radio One?

On Wednesday, June 10, DCRTV broke the news that comedian Chris Paul (right) quit WPGC’s morning Donnie Simpson show without any notice, while Donnie is on vacation.  Paul’s been yanked from CBS-owned PGC’s website and there are rumors that he’s jumping to Radio One, which runs PGC’s urban rival, WKYS. We’re also now hearing about a lot of turmoil at PGC, a longtime urban-formatted station. The ratings have slumped, since the Portable People Meters got unveiled in the DC market last fall. PGC is no longer a reliable “top 5″ performer like it had been for many years. More likely, today, it’s 14th or 15th. And there has been a slump in Simpson’s numbers. We’re told that CBS suits are doing studies to see where the station should be format-wise. There’s been some talk about “moving” the station in more of a contemporary hits direction, a la CBS’s new Amp format in LA or Now format in NYC, to better battle Clear Channel’s high-rated WIHT, Hot 99.5.

Remembering Fat Rodney (Washington City Paper)

by Andrew Noz

Yesterday marked the twentieth anniversary of rapper Fat Rodney’s tragic murder. Frequently heralded as one of most memorable emcees to ever rock the Go-Gos, Rodney’s life was taken from him at just 21 years old in 1989. Over at my site, Cocaineblunts.com, I spoke with Rare Essence’s Andre “Whiteboy” Johnson about Rodney and his legacy:

“When he walked into the room he lit the room up. There are a couple of other guys who had done it before, but I don’t think anybody [did] it to the extent that Rodney had done it. So as he walked through the door, everybody was yelling his chant. “What you gonna do, Fat Rodney?!” We lost a huge talent. And we lost a good friend because Rodney sat around with us for hours, just joking and talking and everything. DC lost a huge talent. Rodney was a great guy, personally. And he was a real good rapper, very observant. The fact that he’s rapping and he spots some girl in the crowd with a red shirt on, he’ll incorporate her into the rap. Spot the guy with the blue jacket on, he brings him into it. All of that is what made Rodney the legend that he is.”

The Temptations & the Funk Brothers in studio session rehearsal (1967)

Given the fact that Motown had not been conducting Live sessions with the vocalists and instrumentalists recording at the same time since at least 1963, this session was clearly staged for the CBS News cameras that were doing a brief piece called The Motown Sound. Pictured in the studio are songwriters Lamont Dozier (Standing on the steps at the back of the studio), Brian Holland (The guy who cuts in on the band), Ivy Jo Hunter (Does the countdown), Russ Terrana (The engineer standing up), James Jamerson on Bass, Earl Van Dyke on piano, Bobbye Hall on congas, and from left to right on guitars Robert White, Joe Messina and Eddie Willis. The arranger, wearing headphones and conducting the band, is William Witherspoon. To the best of my knowledge this incredibly rare piece of film is the only one of two pieces of footage ever shot at a session inside the studio known as the Snakepit.
