Black Voices:
Keyshia Cole is breaking her silence about her estranged relationship with her family members, who have become ‘hood celebrities since being introduced to the public via their top-rated BET reality TV show, ‘The Way It Is.’
In a statement obtained by BV Newswire, the platinum-selling R&B singer set the record straight, essentially saying that her outspoken family members - including mother Frankie Lons, sister Nefferteria Pugh and other sister Elite (last name unknown) - are not authorized to speak about details of her life, because they don’t know any.
“It’s time that I clear the air,” Cole stated. “It’s not a secret that I haven’t been in contact with my mother Frankie, and my sisters, Neffe and Elite, and I never wanted to air out our differences to the public. While I won’t go into detail here, I find it necessary to let you guys know I decided to stop communication with them because I was at a point in my life where I needed serenity and peace to move forward.”
“Please know I love my family very much, but it was time to let it go,” she said. “You guys are a witness to a lot of what was happening from watching on air and online.”
She continued: “Now that I am becoming a mom, my passion for having a loving and peaceful home for my child is my number one priority. It’s very important to both Daniel [Gibson] and I. My plate is very full; I have a new baby coming, we are planning our wedding and I am working in the studio on a new album that I am close to completing.”
“The stress that my family is giving me with their constant false reports is not healthy and it’s not what I need at this time in my life,” she added.
Earlier this week, several media gossip outlets reported that Gibson, a professional basketball player, and Cole are engaged.
The next day, Lons, known as a real live wire among black celebrity bloggers and radio outlets, was interviewed on an Atlanta radio station and confirmed that her daughter was indeed married to Gibson
“Please understand that there are only a few people that can officially confirm or deny anything that’s happening in my life, and that’s me, Daniel, and my publicist, Tresa Sanders,” Cole stated, then added, “And my girl Monica [the singer, who also has a popular BET reality show] never lies.”
With two seasons of ‘The Way It Is’ breaking ratings records for BET, the network created a spinoff vehicle, ‘Frankie & Neffe,’ which propelled Cole’s family members and all for their dysfunction into the limelight.
A rep for Lons could not be reached by deadline today.
Cole’s first child is due in March.

BET is calling 2009 its “best year ever” after enjoying double-digit gains in all four quarters and in all key demographics, and an average viewership of 512,000, the network announced Thursday.
The cable channel attributes its historic ratings growth to “an aggressive strategy that included new original programming, big signature specials, key acquisitions and blockbuster movies.’
In 2009 BET scored the number one award show on cable and the number one program among blacks in cable television history with the “BET Awards ‘09,” which drew 10.7 million total viewers.

From ESSENCE.com
Later this month, BET.com will launch its first scripted web show, “Buppies” starring Tatyana Ali, following the socialite daughter of a celebrity as she and her friends “navigate LA’s young black power elite.” The buzz surrounding the show solidifies the claim, reported by the Washington Post, that Black programming is thriving online.
Online shows, usually in the form of short webisodes, are created and executed by Black talent shut out by network TV these days.
Last year, NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous released a statement on the issue: “At a time when the country is excited about the election of the first African-American president in US history, it is unthinkable that minorities would be so grossly underrepresented on broadcast television.”
The statement followed a NAACP study which found that since 2002, when minorities were cast in a record number of roles on TV (24% of total), there had been a steady decline in available opportunities. The Hollywood bureau of NAACP called this a “virtual whiteout.”
Websites dedicated to Black programming, such as RowdyOrbit.com and Better Black Television, have popped up at a rapid rate over the past year. With brands like BET noting the trend and creating original programming to ride the wave, this DIY work ethic seems to be attracting attention.
“Why online as opposed to with the network?” says Denmark West, president of digital media at BET.com, “it’s an opportunity to provide original content for the Web . . . and to see what kind of online audience we can attract.”
“You can look at this as revolutionary,” says Jonathan Moore, founder and CEO of Rowdy Orbit, which was launched in February. “It is giving people a voice and a platform to express themselves without judgment or red tape holding you down. Now they can go from idea to production to distribution.”

Variety: Screen Gems has acquired “Sheneneh and Wanda,” a comic vehicle for Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence to star in a comic caper film, playing female characters they developed during their stand up comedy days. Foxx will write the script and he and Martin will produce together through Foxx’s Foxxhole and Lawrence’s Runteldat production banners.
The project originated as a parody of a movie trailer for a film called “Skank Robbers,” which Foxx and Lawrence made for the BET Awards. The reaction was strong enough that the duo decided to turn the concept into a real film.
In the comedy, Sheneneh and Wanda are modern day independent women trying to make it on their own, one bank robbery at a time.
Foxx and Lawrence have long tried to find a vehicle to work together, and Screen Gems Clint Culpepper is fast tracking the production.
Foxx, who last starred in “Law Abiding Citizen,” will next be seen in the romantic comedy “Valentine’s Day.” Lawrence will next be seen in the Screen Gems comedy “Death at a Funeral.”

If you’re going to deliver to the world some of your homegrown flavor, why not give it to them live and not just samples of it? At least that’s the way rapper Wale brought it when he took it to the BET Hip-Hop Awards’ stage. Instead of flavoring the stage with sprinkles of Backyard Band’s Dope Jam shots, UCB let the keyboards do the talking. And instead of filling the air with sampled hooks of Backyard Band’s vocalist Weensey singing “Pretty Girls,” the stage was greeted by Weensey himself.
I can dig it!

“The show is getting picked up, so for people that have been petitioning and wondering, it is coming back to BET,” actress Drew Sidora spilled to Sister 2 Sister Magazine this week. “So, hopefully, you will see me back. It is official. The deal has been done.”
The Game — a spinoff of the now defunct series Girlfriends — has become a cult favorite among urban audiences since its premiere in 2006. The CW pulled the plug on the show in June.
“Right now, they’re just trying to figure out when it’s going to actually come back, as far as when we start filming the new episodes and things like that,” Drew says. “But BET has picked it up.”

Despite being up for nine nominations, Kanye West was a no-show for the 4th Annual BET Hip Hop Awards Saturday evening (October 10). T.I. was also a no-show, but he has a reason … he’s in prison.
T.I. took home two awards — best collaboration award for “Live Your Life” with Rihanna, and album of the year for Paper Trail.
In his absence, his fiancee Tameka “Tiny” Cottle accepted his awards, and read a letter by the rapper, who began serving a year-long sentence in late May.
“Although I’m not there with you all, I’m there in spirit,” she quoted the rapper as writing. “My road to redemption is almost over. … Thanks for the support.”
As for other winners, Jay-Z took home the MVP of the Year honor, while newcomer Drake accepted the Rookie of the Year award.
The legendary Ice Cube was in attendance, and was honored with BET’s “I Am Hip-Hop” icon award. Credited with helping pioneer the gangsta rap genre, Cube said he was humbled by the honor.
Then later in the ceremony, the late DJ AM received the DJ of the Year honor. Rapper Busta Rhymes presented the award.
Other show highlights included a performance by Jay-Z and Young Jeezy with “Real As It Gets,” and a recently reunited Goodie Mob performing their 1995 hit “Cell Therapy.”
Other performers included Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Gucci Mane, and Soulja Boy.
Mike Epps served as the evening’s host.
The awards show is set to air October 27th on BET.
Winners mentioned above are:
MVP of the Year: Jay-Z
Rookie of the Year: Drake
Best Hip-Hop Collabo: T.I. & Rihanna - “Live Your Life”
DJ of the Year: DJ AM
I Am Hip-Hop Award: Ice Cube

Rugah TV reports:
Just moments ago on the red carpet of the BET Hip Hop Awards in ATL, Frankie, the mother of R&B sensation Keisha Cole was asked a few questions by media reps. She seemed to be somewhat “not there” as sports a fresh set of gold fronts in her mouth. When her monetary situation and daughter’s assistance was mentioned she broke down into tears and had to be escorted away.

Michael Vick has climbed out of the dog house, and back into the spotlight, following his dog fighting conviction. He’s back in the NFL and trying to rebuild his image, and is launching a new reality show to help do just that.
This week, Vick announced that he’ll be starring in a new reality show on BET in January, where he’ll show the general public how he’s changed.
The upcoming show is called “The Michael Vick Project,” and will focus on his re-entry into the NFL , while taking a look into his recent legal troubles and how he is trying to change the way he was living.
“I just want people to really get to know me as an individual,” the NFL quarterback told the L.A. Times. “I am a human being. I’ve made some mistakes in the past, and I wish it had never happened. But it’s not about how you fall, but about how you pick yourself up.”
Despite changing his tune, some — like PETA — aren’t buying it. They say that Vick isn’t sincere about his apologies and his efforts are just attempted to rehabilitate his tarnished image with the public.
“People who abuse animals don’t deserve to be rewarded,” said PETA spokesman Dan Shannon. “They shouldn’t be given multi-million dollar contracts … or given the privilege of being a role model. We don’t believe Michael Vick understands the seriousness of his crime. I think he’s sorry he got caught, but only time will tell if he’s truly remorseful.”
Financial details regarding how much Vick is being paid for the show are currently unknown. He does, however, owe creditors around $20 million, which he is paying over a six-year span to emerge from bankruptcy.
The upcoming show is being labeled a “docu-series” style show, and not a typical reality show like other athletes such as Terrell Owens, its producers said.
It will focus on Vick’s personal struggles since his release, including the strains on his relationships with his fiance, Kijafa Frink, and his children. He is also set to revisit the federal prison in Leavenworth, Kan., where Vick spent 1 1/2 years behind bars and the Virginia property where he ran and financed a dogfighting ring.
“This show can be a blueprint for so many kids,” Vick told the paper. “I want to show them that things are going to happen, that they’re not going to get through life without dealing with some kind of adversity. I want to show that if they have a fall from grace, this is how they can turn it around. We want this to be a story of hope.”

RICHMOND, Va. – The billionaire co-founder of Black Entertainment Television apologized Monday for pretending to stutter at a campaign event as she mimicked the Democratic candidate for governor.
BET co-founder Sheila Johnson, for years a major donor to President Barack Obama, Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and other Democrats, stunned Virginia political observers in July by endorsing Republican Bob McDonnell in the governor’s race.
He is running against Democrat Creigh Deeds to replace Kaine, who is barred by state law from running for a second straight term.
Virginia and New Jersey are the only states electing governors this fall, making the races an early barometer for next year’s congressional contests.
In a YouTube video posted by Democratic blogger Ben Tribbett from a Sept. 25 McDonnell reception, Johnson tells a small crowd that Virginia needs a governor “who can really communicate, and Bob McDonnell can communicate.”
Watch The Video:
“The other people I talk to, especially his op-op-op-o-opponent, di-di-did this all through my interview with him,” she said to muted laughter. Then she added, “He could not articulate what needed to be done.”
In a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press, Johnson said she sought to highlight Creigh Deeds’ inability to “clearly communicate effective solutions” on important issues.
“I shouldn’t have done it in the manner in which I did and for that I apologize for any offense he, or others, may have taken,” Johnson said.

Ratings for Tiny and Toya’s reality TV show on BET were so good that they earned the title #1 original series in BET history. Tiny & Toya has been green lighted for a second season and cameras will follow Tiny’s group the OMG Girlz and the eventual release of Tiny’s man T.I. from prison at the end of this year or the beginning of next year.

The OMG Girlz performed in Fort Wayne, Indiana. over the weekend. This was the 1st out of town show for the OMG GIRLZ and the promoter Richie Rich went all out. They did billboards and radio and had the largest limo ever. Over 800 kids came out.

Tiny and Toya are really doing a great job with the goup along with Kiesha the manager. Richie Rich has done alot of shows in Indiana and he does a good job helping new acts get great exposure. He gave Soulja Boy one of his 1st shows wayyyyy before the deal and look at him now. OMG GIRLZ are on there way to the top. The kids really had a good time in Fort Wayne.

For all the comments that I see, mainly on social websites, regarding people’s disappointments and disagreements with BET and its currently line up of show, apparently there must be some undercover closet views in our mist.
“On Tuesday, August 25, BET enjoyed a huge night in the ratings as the season finale of TINY & TOYA, it attracted more than 1.9 million total viewers. TINY & TOYA finished the season with an average of 1.8 MM viewers, making it the #1 original series in BET history, according to Nielsen Media Research.”
“The blockbuster night was capped off by the season premiere of the spin-off series, FRANKIE & NEFFE, which garnered 1.9 million total viewers. The premiere of FRANKIE & NEFFE stands as the #2 series debut in BET history.”
