What Must You Do To Be A DJ: DeeJay Rico

What must you do to be a deejay?  There used to be a time when the answer to that question was simply grabbing two turntables and a microphone.  However, add corporates into this mix and you’re going find that’s a bit more than just putting the needle to the groove.

Just ask DeeJay Rico.  In the midst of the shock of hearing that Donnie Simpson would be leaving the airwaves of radio station WPGC, ending a total of 32 years of service to the Washington DC metropolitan area, we also find out that those same airwaves will now also be without the spinning and screaming of DeeJay Rico.

On Friday, January 28, Rico began a series of video blogs, via facebook, and emotionally announced that he had been fired from WPGC… for… get this:  Breaking Format:

In clip four, DeeJay Rico asks the question ‘What should his next move be?  What should he do next?’  My answer to him is that he is already doing it.  Continue building your audience and branding your name.  The internet is a beast.  Use it to its fullest and to the max.  Besides, in using what the internet has to offer you, you definitely don’t have to worry about stuff such as the PPM’s (Portable People Meters) knocking your groove.

According to the Washington Post, “Donnie Simpson said he had thought about not doing Friday’s show. He stayed off the air on Thursday to protest the firing of one of his production assistants, DJ Rico, a 19-year station employee. Rico said he was fir…ed for playing music, including a Prince song, that Simpson had asked for on Wednesday, but had not been approved by the station’s management. Samuel V. Rogers, the CBS Radio executive who oversees WPGC, declined to comment.”

Bottom line, what must you to to be a deejay?  Have yourself a backup plan!

Bootsy Vegas hails his team with ‘Redskins Go-Go’

Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, October 28, 2009

“From the root to the fruit!” says Salih Williams, describing his lifelong devotion to the one of the most wretched teams in professional football today. “I’m a die-hard Redskins fanatic. . . . But the Redskins is like a girl I know I shouldn’t mess with: I keep coming back.”

It’s Monday afternoon at Sound Spa Studios in Alexandria, where Williams is sporting an oversize white T-shirt emblazoned with his alias Bootsy Vegas.

As the newest addition to the Donnie Simpson morning show on WPGC 95.5, Bootsy appears every Wednesday to crack jokes and present his weekly anthem dedicated to Washington’s once unconditionally loved football franchise.

But with the Redskins looking particularly inept this season, cheering them to victory becomes an increasingly tough gig. Over the course of seven weeks, Williams’s tunes have transformed from puffy-chested boasts into droopy-shouldered laments.

Last week, after a humiliating loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Williams rapped to a vintage Geto Boys beat: “At night I can’t sleep, I turn and toss/Think about my ‘Skins and the game we just lost.”

Williams usually puts his songs to tape after watching (and often suffering through) Sunday’s game, but this week he had his work cut out for him. With the Redskins facing the Philadelphia Eagles on “Monday Night Football,” he needed to record a tune that would captivate fans through the Redskins’ upcoming bye week, regardless of the game’s outcome.

He settled on a go-go rendition of “Hail to the Redskins,” the beloved fight song that has kept burgundy and gold blood pumping since the 1930s. Rechristening the song “Redskins Go-Go,” he gave the lyrics a modern tweak and rounded them out with a rap verse. “It’s still the same from back in the day,” he rhymes, waxing nostalgic. “When the seats used to rock at the R-F-K!”

“Go-go is like the Redskins,” Williams says. “It’s in you. If you’re from D.C., it’s in you.”

Earth, Wind And Fire - ‘Keep your Head to the Sky’

The following is an excerpt from a classic live concert of Earth, Wind and Fire (released in 1984).  In this clip, EWF performs segments, ‘Where Have All The Flowers Gone’,  ‘Keep Your Head To The Sky’, and ‘Devotion.’ One of my favorites of all time.

P.S. - I used to have this entire concert on video, but my dumbness loaned the joint to E of OP Tribe (aka Bootsy Vegas) a few years back, and I ain’t seen the joint since.

Donnie Simpson’s Got a Brand New Bag - Mike, Anji and Bootsy!

By Kato

It started out this morning as intense and antagonizing moments for many listeners who had tuned in to find out the winner of WPGC’s America’s Next Top Jock for the Donnie Simpson Morning Show.  Just hours prior, those same listeners were loging online and voting for their favorites out of the top 5 finalist picked.  These 5 had gotten their own day to showcase what they had to offer not only Donnie Simpson, but the entire DMV as well.  Among those top 5 was DC’s own Bootsy Vegas, better known to the Go-Go community as E of OP Tribe.

By the end of the morning, it was widely known that the new addition to Donnie’s Morning Show, in addition to the already newly added Comedian Mike Brooks, was the lovely former WAMO 106.7 Pittsburg radio personality, Anji Corley.  But shortly after the announcement had been made, to the surprise of many (although not to me), Donnie had thrown an extra additive into the new mix.  He also welcomed aboard the theatrical, yet brilliant Bootsy Vegas, who had run a close second.

The reason I state that it was not a surprise to me is because the results were exactly what I had predicted.  I had originally thought that adding a female into Donnie’s morning mix was something that had been missing on his show for a long time, but I had also noticed that what Bootsy had brought to the table during the competition was something special enough to not let get away.  Still, the agoney of waiting to find out the results was draining me, along with the others, as I followed by watching the update coverage on Fox 5’s morning news.

Bootsy, who will be a part of the show as the “Secretary of Swag” starts next week delivering his first Redskins songs for the DMV… just in time for the Redskins/Giants season opener.  What ’syces’ me even more about this second added addition is that I personally know the trials and hills that E has been dealing with for years.  In the words of TMOTT’s own Spearchucker, “After all these years E has slayed the haters, and there were many. Where dey at now?????”

Congratulations both to Anji and E (err… I mean Bootsy)!
