BREAKING NEWS: Allen Iverson Retires

It is official one of the NBA’s greatest players and scorers ever has retired. Allen Iverson told Stephen A. Smith of ESPN today that he is retiring from the NBA. Forget the unfair ending he had to go through but lets remember this legendary career. He was 6 feet tall but was a beast on the court.

The 10-time All-Star played three games this season with Memphis before taking a leave of absence to attend to personal matters. He was waived after the two sides agreed to part ways.

It was the second straight ugly ending for Iverson, who was unhappy last season playing for the Pistons. He was upset that Detroit coach Michael Curry and Memphis’ Lionel Hollins used the former MVP as a reserve.

The New York Knicks considered signing Iverson last week after he cleared waivers, before deciding he would take too much playing time away from younger players they are trying to develop.

The Knicks seemed to be the only team who would consider bringing in Iverson, so there was no guarantee he’d play in the NBA this season, anyway. Still, the announcement Wednesday came as a surprise to George Karl, who coached Iverson in Denver.

Iverson has released the following statement on Stephen A. Smith’s website:

“I would like to announce my plans to retire from the National Basketball Association. I always thought that when I left the game, it would be because I couldn’t help my team the way that I was accustomed to. However, that is not the case.”  –  READ THE ENTIRE STATEMENT HERE

Iverson signs with Memphis; Calling this year “personal”

nba_g_iverson_300Allen Iverson has something to prove.

Though the 10-time All-Star and former league MVP has scored more than 23,000 points in his NBA career, he wasn’t a highly sought-after free agent.

The 34-year-old guard heard all the talk that he’s lost a step, that last year’s dip in offensive production indicated he’s on the downside of his career, maybe even ready for retirement.

Iverson wants to prove those critics wrong, and he’ll get his chance in Memphis.

NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com’s Marc Stein that Iverson signed a one-year deal worth $3.1 million, slightly below the $3.5 million previously reported.

But the deal contains unspecified incentives, which could explain why the Grizzlies renounced their rights earlier Thursday to Spanish guard Juan Carlos Navarro. Surrendering their rights to Navarro created an extra $900,000 in salary-cap space to potentially cover Iverson’s incentives if he reaches them.

The Grizzlies are coming off a 24-58 season that tied for fifth-worst in the NBA.
